Did you know that under many Czech towns and castles you will find undergrounds worth exploring? These are former prisons, nuclear shelters or monuments to interesting historical events. Continue
We Czechs have a great interest in these places, we like to visit for example the underground in Znojmo, Brno, Valtice, Jihlava, Plzeň or Kutná Hora. Not to mention the Prague one.
Beneath our metropolis you will find many hidden, temporary and year-round accessible places. Year-round, you can look under the Old Town Hall or explore the historic underground of the centre of Prague with preserved rooms from the times of George of Poděbrady or Charles IV. Historical tunnels or anti-nuclear bunkers, on the other hand, are only sometimes accessible.
Since 2010, the public has been able to explore the Brno Underground on several routes. You can see, for example, the mintmaster's cellar, the ossuary, or the labyrinth under the Green Market.
A separate chapter is the prison under Špilberk. You can visit the local casemates every weekday and weekend, with an engaging interpretation.
The Pilsen underground has so much to offer. Under the historic centre there are 13 km of tunnels and labyrinths. In the past, they served as a place for food storage and a space for fermentation and maturation of the legendary Czech beer, which has been brewed here since 1842. It is one of the largest historical underground systems in the world.
So, do you know where to go when it's hot outside? Or when you want to hide from the world?
