Already in pagan times, fertility celebrations were held around the world around the beginning of May , referring to the spring awakening of nature and new life. Czechs began to associate May Day with love and falling in love only later, greatly helped by Karel Hynek Mácha and his famous poem. However, who does not immediately recall its first verse "It was late evening - the first of May - the evening of May - it was the time of love."
So what traditions belong to the 1st of May?
Maypoles are erected, spring is welcomed and couples kiss under the cherry blossom tree. Most often they go on a trip to Prague to Petřín, because that is where the statue of Karel Hynek Mácha stands. However, kissing under the blossoming tree is not just romantic, according to pagan traditions it was supposed to ensure the couple's fertility. But enough history, let's enjoy the May Day celebrations in a modern way, and especially in our own way.
