Connecting Indian Traditions with Europe
Mexican cuisine did not begin to take shape until the 16th century, when European expansion overseas was underway. As a result, local ingredients and recipes began to be combined with European traditions and the culinary arts of African slaves. As a result, it is one of the most diverse cuisines in the world.
The worldwide popularity of Mexican recipes is proof that the fusion of the traditions of different continents has worked very well. As well as being a UNESCO Intangible Heritage Site since 2010.

What is typical of Mexican cuisine?
Mexico's cuisine is vast enough to be summed up in one paragraph. Each region has its own distinct characteristics. However, there are a few ingredients that you will encounter virtually anywhere. The most typical ingredients are beans, corn, tomatoes, avocados, squash and, of course, chili peppers. This also makes the dishes relatively healthy. To make them tasty, various sauces, i.e. salsa, and of course avocado guacamole, are also very popular here.
There's no shortage of meat either, whether it's chicken (pollo), beef (carno de vacuno) or pork (cerdo). And we mustn't forget the fish either! A local specialty is the so-called ceviche, a direction of raw fish and seafood that is marinated in lime juice for several hours, which makes it turn tender and lose its typically fishy smell.
But you'd be hard pressed to find such a classic bread here; traditional pastries include wheat tortilla or corn taco.
What to drink in Mexico?
And what to wash it all down with? Have a cerveza, as beer is called here. If you'd prefer something spicier, you can't go wrong with tequila made from agave. Forget salt and lemon, though, you won't find anything like that in Mexico. It's drunk by the sip and washed down with plenty of water.
