Team building among the bees: How we swapped the office for a beehive for a day

Teambuilding with the bees: What did we learn about bees, ourselves and teamwork?

When people think of team building, bowling, a get-together at a restaurant or brewery, or a barbecue usually comes to mind. But we decided to take a slightly different route – to visit some of the hardest workers in the world.

Our journey took us to a bee farm in Úštěk. And because we at Adrop love trying out experiences for ourselves, it was clear that this time we’d be beekeepers for a few hours.

We've tried it for you

First stop: the Api House – a glimpse into the world of bees

On a scorching summer day, we began our bee-themed adventure in the Api House. This unassuming wooden structure holds something truly special – beehives built directly into its walls. Through glass panels, you can watch life inside the hive from the front row, without disturbing its residents.

This was where our little bee academy began.

Andrea guided us through the fascinating world of bees and had also prepared a quiz competition for us. We discovered, for instance, how many eyes a bee has, how the queen bee “decides” whether a drone or a worker bee will be born, and how perfectly the entire colony works together.

And of course, one very important question came up…

Are drones really a little bit… useless?

Let’s just say that, in the bee world, worker bees do the vast majority of the work. They build, collect pollen, care for larvae, guard the hive and make honey.

And drones? They actually have just one truly important task. What exactly is it? We won’t give it away. It would be a shame to spoil the surprise.

When you become a beekeeper, do it properly

After the theory came the time for practice.

We put on our beekeeping suits, pulled on our veils and headed straight out among the hives. We were surprised by how many different types of hive there are and how varied they can look.

Then came the moment when we stopped pretending to be seasoned adventurers.

Each of us had the chance to lift out a frame full of bees and honey with our own hands. Although hundreds of bees were flying around us, the atmosphere was surprisingly calm. If you treat bees with respect, they will usually return it.

Everyone got their own drone

At the end of the beekeeping tour came another memorable experience. Each of us was given our very own drone to hold. Yes, a live one. In the end, we all released them together.

After a morning among the hives, we had certainly earned a hearty lunch at a nearby restaurant.

Escape game

The afternoon was dedicated to an escape game, taking place partly outdoors and partly in the Api House.

Suddenly, it was no longer about who knew the most about bees. It was about communication, logical thinking, teamwork and, above all, the ability to pull together. This was exactly where we saw how our team works. Some searched for clues, others pieced together the connections, some organised the rest of the group… and naturally, there was plenty of friendly rivalry between the teams too.

It was a battle.

But the victory? It was truly sweet.

Making and some well-earned rest

After the escape game, we all returned to the Api House for the calmer final part of the programme. We made beeswax candles as a keepsake and rounded off the day with a honey hand wrap.

Tip from professional beekeeper Andrea: a honey hand wrap

You can easily enjoy it at home too. All you need is a teaspoon of honey for each hand and a pair of plastic gloves.

Apply the honey evenly to clean hands, put on the gloves and leave it to work for around 10 minutes. Then rinse off the honey with lukewarm water and enjoy beautifully soft skin.

What did we take away from the team building?

Just like in a bee colony, everyone has their role in a good team. It works best when its members can rely on one another, are not afraid to ask for help and pull together.

Adrop Api House

If you are looking for team building that is far from ordinary, teaches you something new and still offers plenty of fun, we can wholeheartedly recommend this beekeeping experience. Just be warned – you may leave with a whole new respect for bees. Or perhaps the opposite will happen: before long, you could have your own Api House and bees in the garden.

And if bees are not for you, no problem. At Adrop, you are sure to find your own dream team building – from adrenaline-fuelled experiences and creative workshops to relaxed group activities.
